Is This Too Victorian Looking for a Beach Cottage Family Room?

I'm trying to go for the beach cottage look in my family room. White slipcovered couches and chairs, wood floors, and sheer white curtains and bamboo blinds on the windows. It's not totally beach though - I don't have wood planks on my walls. Would buying and using this as an ottoman/bench in my family room be out of place? The description says that it is inspired by the Victorian era. I just love it so much though!

  • I think the part that doesn't make it look beachy is the brown wood. I think that if you wanted to make it look beachier, you could paint the spindle legs white.
But, you could also make this yourself to fit your space - choose a beachy fabric, grab some furniture legs from the hardware store and paint them white, and then grab some foam padding and some fabric buttons and put it all together. That would guarantee that you're getting something that fits your space perfectly!
  • I think it could work. I do like the PP's idea of painting the legs white, though. There isn't anything wrong with mixing styles within reason. The color definitely says, "beachy." Many designs I've seen mix eras and styles/patterns.
  • If you love it, get it!  I have a certain type at my place too, but when it comes to things, if I find something I love, I go for it.  I will find a spot for it and make it look good.  It is my house so I want it to have things in it that I love.  :)  I have a little mixture in my house, and I think it looks great, comforting.  Go for it!!!!  I love it!

  • If this is a piece that you love, it will work.  I think it's really gorgeous and I could see it in a beachy theme even with the brown legs.  I've also read on several design blogs that having one piece that is "off theme" in a room is a good idea and keeps things interesting.

  • The important thing about decorating, IMO, is finding things you like and making them work. I have 3 rooms in my house in beachy/cottage style, and that would look great in them. I have Ikea's white slipcovered sofa and an overall beachy/cottage theme.

I'd love that piece, and wouldn't change the legs.
